Launched a year ago, LightsON campaign was initiated with the vision of unlocking the potential of youths and create a sense of strong civic sense to make our communities a better place to live in. Using low-cost technology, youths were capacitated with technological tools to collect the streetlights data of Kathmandu Valley. With the data collected as an evidence, this event not only aims to initiate an open dialogue to discuss on how the issues of poor maintenance of civic utilities like streetlights can be addressed using right data and evidence based policy making but also to celebrate the hard work and dedication of youths. This policy dialogue hosted by YI-Lab aims to bring together elected government representative, development planning experts, police official, open data enthusiasts, local citizens and youths in an interactive discussion session to discuss data-driven policy making and planning particularly focusing on streetlights. A mobile app was developed to collect data and a portal where all the street lights data is stored, and visualized as an interactive digital map. So far, LightsON campaign has reached out to 1500+ youths, mobilized 100+ youths and certified 30+ youths who mapped more than 100 or more streetlights data. Almost 6000 streetlights data inside Kathmandu Valley have been collected through crowdsourcing. Based on the data, we can visualize the streetlights on a particular street/alley/road and its status. The condition and functionality can also be observed on the platform with a picture as evidence.
The YI-Lab is a collaborative platform and experimental pop-up to catalyze and mobilize the creative energy of young people between 15-29 to co-create solutions for inclusive development.
